American
Cancer Society
contributions to the Community
through Relay Partnerships
The
efforts put forth in participation and fundraising for the
American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Pottstown have a
direct impact on cancer programs in the greater Pottstown
area. Benefits provided by the ACS to the Pottstown Memorial
Medical Center and Pottstown Cancer Treatment Center include:
• 4 chemotherapy treatment chairs
• the “Quit Smoking and Give a Kid a Chance”
Program
• the Oncology Resource Center/Lending Library (located
at Pottstown Library)
• the Complementary Care Program in 2001 and 2002
• breast cancer community education/mailings.
The ACS
also provides additional support on an ongoing basis for the
patient information kiosk in the PMMC lobby and the “Road
to Recovery” program which helps transport patients
to necessary appointments. This program provides approximately
250 trips per month to cancer patients and is possible because
of volunteer drivers who live in the area. ACS also provides
supplies for the “Look Good…Feel Better”
program for women undergoing cancer treatment. This is offered
by PMMC 2-3 times annually and provides free wig bank services
to all cancer patients with a $75.00 reimbursement plan for
new wigs. The “Man to Man” support group for prostate
cancer patients also receives assistance from the ACS in the
form of mailings.
In addition to all of those wonderful programs, the ACS provides
support for cancer medication assistance, durable medical
equipment assistance, scholarships for student survivors,
patient education literature, and prevention and detection
literature. The ACS also sponsors summer camp trips for pediatric
patients.
Knowledge is power! And your knowledge of the existence of
these programs in our Pottstown Community and the fact that
they are a direct result of Relay money raised by our fabulous
community provide an opportunity for you to better educate
family, friends, and neighbors. Furthermore, gaining participation
and increasing donations often hinges on how well we know
our non-profit organization and the benefits it provides to
the surrounding area. Help spread the word so survivors and
future cancer patients are aware of all the wonderful ACS
programs available to them in our own back yard!
