The
Children’s Hour has been a part of the Relay for
Life of Pottstown for a number of years now. The purpose
of this portion of our Relay is to honor child cancer
survivors and highlight the issues and resources associated
with having a child with cancer. Every hour in the United
States, a child is diagnosed with cancer.
Right
now there are 270,000 survivors of pediatric cancer
in the United States. About 80% of children with this
disease survive five years or longer. For these children
and their families, making it through their cancer treatment
physically and emotionally is an amazing accomplishment.
This is also the beginning of the child’s journey
as a cancer survivor—a journey which lasts the
remainder of that child’s life. Unfortunately,
the disease and its treatments leave many patients with
lingering pain, brain damage or other serious disabilities.
The "late effects" of childhood cancer are
ongoing and it is important people are aware of the
psychological implications of cancer for child survivors
and their families. Child survivors many years out of
treatment may be quite overwhelmed. We feel very strongly
our community child survivors be recognized in their
own right and the families of these children connected
with each other. The children’s hour allows this
to occur.
Entertainment
involving child performers is also showcased during
this time slot. The Hour begins with the children’s
“Links Lap” and concludes with our Junior
Grand Marshals (designated child survivors less than
18 years of age) leading a lap around the track for
children only. The Music at the Relay during this time
is also geared to young children, favorites appropriate
to the young are broadcast for all to enjoy. |
