LINKS AGAINST CANCER

A School Community Project

Guidelines and Project Instructions

Thank you for your interest in this year’s Links Against Cancer Project. Volunteering and participating in charitable projects are good learning experiences for our children and helps to build a sense of community within our schools. With your help, our Chain of Hope will circle the track and will show our schools’ commitment in the fight against a group of diseases that has touched all of us in some way.

Guidelines and Project Instructions
  • This project is not intended to be used as a team fundraiser, however you may ask for a token donation if desired. If asking for a donation, please only request 25 cents (but larger donations will gladly be accepted).  Please DO NOT sell links as part of a fun-fair, school carnival, service project, etc.

  • Remember, ALL students, faculty and staff members get ONE link regardless of the size or lack of donation. EVERYONE gets a link! The organizing group from the school is responsible for turning in any donations at the relay. The donation should be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of the school community, NOT from a specific relay team.

  • The size of each link should be 11 x 2 inches. Please use heavy enough paper so that the chain is strong enough to survive the victory lap. From past experience, cardstock works best and it is highly recommended that you DO NOT use construction paper. Any color for your school’s links is acceptable. Have fun and be creative. A sample sheet of links, with a pre-printed message is provided. You do not have to use these links, but if you like them, feel free to copy and use them.  When connecting the links, overlap the edges and secure with three staples. Staples are sturdier than tape or glue.

  • Bring your completed chain to the Relay for Life event by 2:45 p.m. on  the Saturday of the Relay For Life of Pottstown. The exact assembly area will be announced at the May captain’s meeting. There will be extra links at the assembly area to connect your chain to the chains from other schools.

  • Invite the students, families, faculty and staff to come to the relay to help carry the Chain of Hope on our victory lap. The chain will be the centerpiece of the Kid’s Program during the 3 p.m. hour. Anyone wishing to help carry the chain should also be at the assembly area no later than 2:45 p.m. on the Saturday of the Relay For Life of Pottstown.

Good Luck with the project. If you have any other questions, feel free to call me at 610-323-4245 or e-mail at gmshall@comcast.net
